After thoughtful review and careful consideration, the Florida Writers Association Board of Directors has voted to pause the Royal Palm Literary Awards for the 2026 season.
This strategic pause allows FWA to thoughtfully strengthen and reimagine the program—refining standards, modernizing systems, and aligning RPLA with current industry practices and serving FWA's vision as a premier resource for writers at every stage of their journey.
Member Offerings During the Pause
During this time, FWA will launch craft-focused programming to support members’ writing lives. Programming will focus on craft development, accountability, and community, while helping members strengthen works-in-progress and prepare their best possible submissions for the future return of RPLA.

Royal Palm Literary Awards – 2026 Strategic Pause FAQ
Why is FWA pausing the Royal Palm Literary Awards for 2026? The Royal Palm Literary Awards have been part of the Florida Writers Association for more than two decades, and this pause reflects a deliberate investment in the future. By stepping back for the 2026 season, FWA is creating space to thoughtfully strengthen the program—refining standards, modernizing tools and systems, clarifying processes, and ensuring RPLA is positioned to meet writer and reader expectations.
Is RPLA being discontinued? No. This is a planned, time-bound pause for revitalization and long-term sustainability. The intention is for RPLA to return stronger, clearer, and more aligned with FWA’s mission and industry expectations.
What does this mean for FWA members in 2026? While RPLA is paused, members will continue to receive meaningful value through new and expanded craft-focused and community-building programming.
When will the new programming launch? Our craft-focused and community-building programming will roll out in phases during 2026. Members will receive regular updates as each element becomes available.
Will past RPLA winners or finalists be affected? No. Past awards, recognitions, and honors remain unchanged. The pause applies only to the 2026 contest season.
Will judges and volunteers be involved during the pause? Yes—though differently. The pause year will allow FWA to rebuild and support a strong pipeline of future judges and volunteer leaders, with opportunities to re-engage when RPLA returns. How will members be kept informed? FWA is committed to clear, ongoing communication. Updates will be shared via email, the website, and member communications as plans continue to develop.
